Creme brûlée without a steamer pan or blow torch

In my last post I showed you how to make creme brûlée without using the oven because it’s summer and it’s absolutely gross to turn on the oven when it’s 90 degrees, instead we use a steamer pan to steam the creme brûlée and they came out perfect. Not only does steaming it cut down the cooking time drastically it also doesn’t turn your house or apartment into a giant oven. From the last post I have received a lot of questions and the most I received was

  1. What do I do if I don’t have a proper steamer pan ( in my case I used an alway pan which came with a steamer basket )

  2. I don’t have a torch, how do I caramalized the sugar ( I do own a torch, it cost only $15 on Amazon but I understand why some people are not committed to getting one tough I 100% recommend getting one

Let me tell you this, you do not need a fancy steamer pan or an always pan ( which costs $150 ) to make creme brûlée. You can turn any pots or pan into a steamer pan as long as they’re wide and deep enough like this pot I got from ikea:

Now that you’ve got a pot or pan you’re gonna use, you’re going to make a little ring out of aluminum foil and place it inside the pot and fill it with about 1 cup of water. *make sure that foil is folded a couple times so it can withhold the weight

Next place a flat heat-proof object on top of the aluminum foil ring and you’re good to go!

And that bring us to the next question:

What to do if I do not own a blow torch?

Well, a spoon and some flames from your stove will do the trick. Simply heat up your spoon directly over an open fire until it is scorching hot then place that hot spoon directly over your creme brûlée that’s covered with sugar

( ok I know I use a torch because I don’t have a gas stove I have an electric stove so for demonstration purposes I had to use my torch )

And voila! You made a creme brûlée without an oven and a blow torch.

Here are my thoughts on the hot spoon trick: it works but definitely not as efficient as a blow torch and it does ruin the spoon, so if you’re doing this, be sure to use your least favorite spoon. The caramelized sugar top is also not as thick and as caramelized but it is still a delicious creme brûlée.
